Emergency reinforcement underway to secure Ngawun embankment as river levels drop

AUTHORITIES, tech­nical experts, and the Ayeyawady Region Gov­ernment are accelerating riverbed stabilization and erosion control operations as the Ngawun River drops below 30 feet. Engineering teams are using split barg­es and dredgers to deposit large geo-bags, sandbags, and gabion rock mattress­es into deep-water chan­nels to raise the riverbed, while driving steel sheet piles and stand pipes to re­sist underwater scouring. Sand pumping, geotextile laying, and geo-tube place­ment are also underway to redirect water flow away from vulnerable areas.

During an on-site inspection and a subse­quent coordination meet­ing in Hinthada with re­gional leaders, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation U Bo Bo Kyaw instructed teams to capitalize on the receding water levels and slower currents to rapidly block dangerous inflows, reinforce the subsiding embankment, and prevent further erosion. — MNA/ ST
