Humanoid robots run 100 meters in under 9 seconds at event in China

Humanoid robots have run 100 meters in under 9 seconds -- faster than the human record -- at an event in China.

The World Humanoid Robot Games were held in Beijing for five days through Wednesday. More than 2,000 robots -- four times the number of last year -- from 16 countries took part. The games had 51 competitions, including track and field events, soccer and even food and beverage service in scenario-based contests.

In the 100-meter final, a Chinese robot won with a time of 8.64 seconds. The other four competitors also finished in under 9 seconds, beating the human world record of 9.58 seconds set by Usain Bolt.

In the soccer event last year, many machines crowded around the ball and fell over. But in this year's final, a Chinese robot hit the back of the net from outside the penalty area. The Chinese team beat Italy 10-1.

A spectator in his 30s said he felt very excited, and that progress in science and technology is very fast.

A woman in her 40s said she was surprised and impressed because robot technology has reached a very high level. She also said engineers will create many more smart robots based on needs.
