Minbu (Sagu) targets 40,000+ acres of monsoon paddy

THE Minbu (Sagu) Township Agriculture Department is planning to cultivate more than 40,000 acres of monsoon paddy in Minbu (Sagu) Township, Magway Region, this year to ensure domestic rice security, according to the department.
More than 40,000 acres of monsoon paddy will be cultivated in the township using six water sources, including dams, electric water pumps, groundwater, small dams and rainwater harvesting systems. Local farmers are cultivating short-duration, high-yielding varieties such as Aung Naing Toe and Sar Pho Tha, as well as marketable varieties including Ayeyamin, Manawthukha, Sinthukha and Yadana Toe 90-day.
In addition, the Township Agriculture Department is working with local farmers to cultivate 74 acres of medium-duration model paddy plots, experimental paddy fields for competitive varieties and demonstration plots under the department’s support programme for the 2026- 2027 financial year.
The Township Department is providing rice varieties and necessary agricultural inputs to farmers participating in the model and experimental paddy fields as part of its field-support programme. In addition, under the supervision of the regional government, urea fertilizer is being distributed to farmers participating in the model and experimental paddy fields at affordable prices during this year’s monsoon paddy planting season.
Similarly, staff members from the department are providing farming techniques and conducting farmer-awareness programmes to increase paddy yields per acre, achieve target yields and expand cultivation beyond the targeted acreage, according to the head of the Township Agriculture Department.
In Minbu (Sagu) Township, the department plans to cultivate 41,307 acres of monsoon paddy during the 2026- 2027 planting season, of which more than 32,000 acres have been cultivated to date.
