Over 3,200 acres of cowpea for winter crop cultivation season to be cultivated

            It is estimated to cultivate 3,200 acres of cowpea for this winter crop cultivation season in Pwintbyu Township, Magway, according to the Township Agriculture Department.

            In Pwintbyu Township, 3,233 acres of cowpea have been targeted for this winter season cultivation. The cultivation process will begin in October and the township departmental officials will provide necessary agricultural techniques and assistance in planting varieties that are suitable for the region and target yields. Local farmers in Pwinbyu Township have been relying on cowpea cultivation as a marketable crop during the winter crop season to increase their income. This year, for cowpea farmers, the Township Department of Agriculture will provide agricultural advices to enhance crop yields including assistance in obtaining high-yielding varieties, expanding cultivation acreage, pest and disease control, and systematic water usage for irrigation.

If cowpeas can be cultivated to achieve better yields, it will not only ensure sufficient local consumption but also generate income through the sale of surplus produce. Therefore, efforts should be made across all regions to expand cowpea cultivation, according to an official.
