15-year-old Min Amara Wati becomes Myanmar’s youngest WFM chess player
Myanmar chess player Min Amara Wati, 15, has become the youngest player in Myanmar’s chess history to earn the Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad 2026 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the WFM title is one of four official women’s titles and is held for life.
During the tournament, Min Amara Wati first secured the Woman Candidate Master (WCM) title before earning the WFM title. In 2024, aged 13, she secured the ASEAN No 1 position at the East Asian Youth Chess Championship in Malaysia. Now rated 1,750, she aims to progress to higher titles, including Woman International Master (WIM) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM).
Her achievements are the result of years of dedication to chess. While enjoying time with her schoolmates and taking part in activities typical of children her age, she spent many nights studying and practising chess at home. At the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, she had scored six points after nine games.
