Asian Games: Myanmar women’s team suffers heavy defeat to S Korea
ON the first day of the women’s football Group F stage at the 20th Asian Games, hosted by Japan on 14 September, the Myanmar women’s football team lost 0-5 to South Korea.
Facing Asian powerhouse South Korea, the Myanmar team mainly focused on earning points and conceding as few goals as possible, but allowed five goals. Although Myanmar managed to keep a clean sheet until around 25 minutes, they conceded the opening goal in 28 minutes, followed by three goals in the first half and two in the second half.
Myanmar Women’s starting lineup was led by veteran players — captain Khin Marlar Tun and striker Win Theingi Tun.
For South Korea, Midfielder Kim Min-ji scored a hat-trick in 28, 32 and 59 minutes, while defender Jang Selgi scored in 37 minutes and Choe Yuri in 77 minutes.
Myanmar goalkeeper Myo Mya Mya Nyein prevented South Korea from scoring another goal by saving a penalty.
In the other Group F match, North Korea trounced Bangladesh 10-0.
Myanmar will play their second group match against North Korea on 17 September. — Nyi Myat Thawda
