Myanmar ships nearly 1M tonnes of maize to Thailand duty free
MYANMAR exported approximately one million tonnes of maize to Thailand during the tariff exemption period, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
Myanmar corn is granted duty free access to Thailand each year from February to August. Maize shipments moved through Yangon, the Kawthoung-Ranong route, and the Myawady border trade channel during this zero-tariff period.
Myanmar primarily exports corn to Thailand and the Philippines. Although Thailand’s tariff exemption period has ended, exports to the Philippines will continue. Robust demand from domestic feed processing factories currently raises prices.
Myanmar cultivates approximately 1.38 million acres of maize, with annual production of over 84 million baskets (more than 2.06 million tonnes). Maize is grown mostly in hill regions, with about 85 per cent cultivated as a monsoon crop between 15 May and the first week of June. — ASH/KK
