Super El Nino Seen in Late 2026; Preparedness Urged
SUPER El Niño is expected in late 2926 so people should stay on alert, and preparedness is necessary, according to different sectors, said the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
According to forecasts based on new updates from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and international meteorological agencies, El Niño is firmly established and will intensify into a very strong event in the coming months, with big impacts on rainfall and temperature patterns and associated risks of floods, drought and extreme heat.
Due to this impact, abnormal rainfall and storms, drought, extreme heat, drinking water shortages, and extreme weather conditions are forecast in Myanmar, so the public are advised to pay special attention to DMH’s announcements for preparedness, said DMH director U Hla Tun.
Concerning the El Niño impact, Chief Minister of Ayeyawady Region, U Aye Kyaw, instructed necessary preparedness in the coordination meeting of the regional natural disaster management committee held on 28 September.
The chief minister instructed that a proper drainage system be ensured and that rainwater be conserved and freshwater resources be protected to prevent water shortages for drinking and irrigated crops in Pyapon and Labutta districts, which are prone to flooding by saltwater.
For fire hazards possibly driven by hot and dry weather, the Chief Minister urged district or township administrators and fire stations to plan fire safety prevention measures and cooling centres, and to cooperate with respective institutions for effective responses. — TWA/ZS
