Rescue efforts stepped up in flood-hit Taninthayi
HEAVY and continuous rainfall triggered
by a land depression that crossed Myanmar has caused flooding in some townships
in Taninthayi Region since the evening of 26 September. Several sections of
the Dawei-Launglon-Kyauknimaw-Shinmaw road were also inundated, blocked by
landslides and obstructed by debris at bridges.
A rescue team comprising Tatmadaw personnel
from the Coastal Region Command, Myanmar Police Force members, officials from
regional government departments, social welfare and charitable organizations
and ethnic residents left Launglon Township yesterday morning to clear
landslides and provide assistance to flood-affected people along the road.
The team reached Kadet Ngehtein Village, which suffered significant impacts
from the natural disaster in the afternoon and is carrying out rescue and
relief activities.
The team has distributed drinking water
to 310 households in five wards of Launglon Township using a water tanker, provided
healthcare services to local residents, cleared landslides along the Launglon-Kadet
Ngehtein road using machinery, levelled and repaired roads and removed debris
blocking bridges.
Officials from the Taninthayi Region Government
and the Coastal Region Command have inspected the rescue and flood prevention
activities and are coordinating necessary measures, according to reports. —
